Why Choose a Gas Fire for Your Kent Home?

A gas fire gives you the look and warmth of a real flame with none of the work that comes with solid fuel. There are no logs to buy or store, no kindling to chop, no ash to clear, and no waiting for the room to warm up. For a lot of homeowners across Kent, that convenience is the whole appeal.

Here’s why a gas fire is worth considering:

Instant, Controllable Heat

A gas fire lights at the push of a button, and many models come with a remote or thermostatic control so you can set the temperature and leave it. The heat is immediate and easy to adjust, which makes a gas fire ideal for a main living room you use every evening.

A Genuine Flame and a Real Focal Point

Modern gas fires have moved a long way from the blue-flame units of years ago. With realistic log, coal or pebble fuel beds and deep, glowing flame pictures, a quality gas fire becomes the natural centrepiece of a room, whether your taste leans traditional or contemporary.

Low Maintenance, Clean Running

Gas burns cleanly. There’s no soot to deal with day to day and no mess after each use, just an annual service to keep everything running safely. Compared with an open fire, a sealed or efficient gas appliance produces far fewer particulates, which matters in towns such as Canterbury and Folkestone where air quality matters.

Works Even Without a Chimney

No chimney? No problem. Balanced flue and flueless gas fires are designed for homes that have never had a chimney, including many newer properties around Ashford and the Thanet developments. We’ll confirm what suits your room during the survey.

Efficient Warmth

Today’s gas fires are far more efficient than the old open-fronted units. Glass-fronted and room-sealed balanced flue models in particular keep the heat in the room rather than losing it up the flue, and flueless fires run close to 100% efficient because nothing is vented outside at all.

Adds Appeal When You Sell

A neatly installed gas fire, properly certified, is a feature buyers respond well to. It reads as a finished, ready-to-use focal point, which is exactly what people want to see when they walk into a living room.

About Coeval Fires — Kent’s Gas Fire Specialists

Coeval Fires was established in 2011 and has been fitting gas fires, stoves and fireplaces across Kent and the South East ever since. Our installers bring over 25 years of combined trade experience to the work, covering everything from a straightforward gas fire swap to a full chimney breast remodel with a new feature fireplace.

We’re based in Dover and work throughout East Kent and beyond, including Deal, Sandwich, Folkestone, Hythe, Ashford, Canterbury, Whitstable and the Thanet towns.

Our Credentials

Gas Safe Registered: By law, all gas fire work in the UK must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Ours are fully qualified and carry their Gas Safe ID, which lists exactly which appliances they’re certified to work on. You’ll receive the relevant safety documentation on completion.

HETAS Registered Too: As a full fireplace specialist we’re also HETAS registered for solid fuel work, so if you’re weighing up gas against a wood burner you’ll get honest, qualified advice on both from the same team.

5-Year Workmanship Guarantee: Every installation is backed by a 5-year guarantee on our workmanship, on top of the manufacturer’s warranty on your chosen fire.

Flue Liners Warranted to 30 Years: Where a conventional flue gas fire needs the chimney lined, the flexible liner systems we use carry warranties of up to 30 years.

Our Approach

We don’t run a high-street showroom, and that’s a deliberate decision. Showrooms cost a great deal to operate, and that cost ends up on the customer’s bill. Instead we work through our manufacturer network, which gives you access to thousands of gas fire and fireplace designs, far more than any single showroom in Kent could ever stock.

Every job begins with a free home survey. We come out, check your flue or chimney, talk through what you want, and give you straight advice with no pressure. You’ll have a full written quotation before any work starts.

Types of Gas Fire We Install in Kent

The right gas fire for your home depends mainly on what kind of flue or chimney you have. During the survey we’ll establish that first, then match you to the appliances that will work safely in your space.

Conventional Flue Gas Fires

These vent through an existing chimney, either a traditional brick or stone (Class 1) chimney or a pre-fabricated (Class 2) flue found in many homes built from the 1960s onwards. They can be open-fronted for the most natural look. Where the existing flue isn’t sound, we line it with a flexible stainless steel liner as part of the job.

Balanced Flue Gas Fires

Balanced flue fires are completely room-sealed and glass-fronted. They use a twin-wall pipe through an external wall that draws fresh air in and pushes exhaust gases out at the same time, so they don’t need a chimney and don’t draw air from inside the room. They’re highly efficient and a popular choice for newer homes around Ashford, Hawkinge and Whitfield that were never built with a chimney.

Flueless Gas Fires

A flueless fire needs neither a chimney nor an external wall. It uses a built-in catalytic converter to clean the combustion gases before releasing them safely back into the room. There are conditions: the room has to meet a minimum size and an air vent is required. We’ll measure up and confirm suitability during the survey.

Gas Stoves and Hole-in-the-Wall Fires

If you like the look of a freestanding stove without the upkeep of solid fuel, a gas stove gives you the same shape with the convenience of gas. We also fit contemporary hole-in-the-wall, inset, outset and wall-mounted fires, with log, coal or pebble fuel beds to suit the style of the room.

Our Gas Fire Installation Process in Kent

We handle the whole installation from first visit to final handover, bringing in any additional trades, such as builders or plasterers, where a project needs them.

Step 1: Free Survey

We visit your home at a time that suits you, including evenings and weekends. We check your chimney or flue arrangement, talk through styles and outputs, and advise on hearth and ventilation requirements and any preparation the room needs.

Step 2: Written Quotation

After the survey you’ll get a clear, itemised quotation covering the fire, the flue work, and the fitting. No hidden extras.

Step 3: Choosing Your Fire

We guide you through the options from our manufacturer partners, matching the fire to your flue type, heat requirement, style and budget. You’re welcome to check the appliance on delivery before we begin.

Step 4: Flue and Chimney Preparation

Where it’s needed, we prepare the chimney or flue. For a conventional flue fire that may mean lining the chimney with a flexible liner. For a balanced flue model we install the twin-wall pipe through the external wall. Flueless installs need the correct ventilation provision in place.

Step 5: Installation

Our Gas Safe engineer fits the fire, connects the gas supply, and completes the hearth, fascia and any surrounding stonework or fireplace surround.

Step 6: Commissioning, Safety Check and Handover

We commission the fire, carry out the gas safety checks, and show you how to operate it safely and what to expect from your annual service. You’ll receive your documentation, and we’ll recommend a carbon monoxide alarm for the room if you don’t already have one.

What Our Customers Say

We’ve helped thousands of Kent homeowners get the fire they wanted, fitted properly and safely. Here’s some of their feedback:

“Best thing we have had done. We’ve started using our Real Copper Kettle on the top of our stove and use the warm water it produces to top up the Kitchen Kettle with already warm water for Tea or use it for washing up the dishes. Money saving and so warming too on these dull winter days. Thank you Coeval Fires.”
Jean Hickman, Facebook

“I couldn’t recommend Coeval Fires more. They turned up when they said and fitted the woodburner efficiently leaving no mess at all. Lee suggested the style & size for our room and he was completely right! It looks great — cheaper than the other quotes we were given and the dog loved them. Very happy, thanks guys.”
theothedog, Yell.com

“Very reliable, friendly and they gave good advice.”
Lee Graeme, Facebook

“They did a great job, completed to time, very friendly happy pair!”

Gas Fire Installation in Kent — Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does it cost to install a gas fire in Kent?

It depends on the fire you choose, the type of flue work involved, and the condition of your existing chimney or wall. As a rough guide, a like-for-like replacement of an existing gas fire is at the lower end, while a new balanced flue installation through an external wall, or a conventional flue fire that needs the chimney lined, will cost more. We give you a full itemised quotation after your free survey, so the price is clear before any work begins.

Q: Do I need a chimney to have a gas fire installed?

No. If you don’t have a chimney, a balanced flue gas fire can be fitted against an external wall, venting through a twin-wall pipe, or a flueless fire can be installed with the right ventilation and room size. We see plenty of chimney-free homes around Ashford and the Thanet new-builds, and there’s almost always a suitable option. We confirm the best route during the survey.

Q: What’s the difference between a conventional flue, balanced flue and flueless gas fire?

A conventional flue fire vents through an existing chimney and can be open-fronted. A balanced flue fire is room-sealed and glass-fronted, drawing air in and pushing gases out through a single pipe to an outside wall, so it needs no chimney. A flueless fire uses a catalytic converter to clean the gases and release them back into the room, which means no chimney or outside wall, though it does need a minimum room size and an air vent. Your engineer will recommend the right type for your home.

Q: Can I have a gas fire if I don’t have mains gas?

Yes. Many gas fires can run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) instead of mains gas, which is a common solution for rural properties around Sandwich, Eastry and the villages that aren’t on the gas grid. We’ll check the appliance is LPG-compatible and advise on the supply arrangement during the survey.

Q: Does a gas fire have to be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer?

Yes, by law. Any gas appliance in the UK must be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and doing it any other way is both illegal and dangerous. All of our gas fire work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers, and you can ask to see their ID card, which lists the appliances they’re qualified to work on.

Q: How often should a gas fire be serviced?

A gas fire should be serviced once a year, following the manufacturer’s instructions. If those aren’t available, the Gas Safe Register advises an annual service unless an engineer recommends otherwise. A yearly check keeps the fire running efficiently and, more importantly, confirms it’s burning safely with no risk of carbon monoxide.

Q: Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a gas fire?

We strongly recommend one. Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, and a working CO alarm fitted to the current British Standard (EN 50291) is the simplest way to protect your household. It’s also a legal requirement for landlords to have a CO alarm in any room with a fixed gas appliance (gas cookers are exempt). We’ll point out where to fit one when we hand the fire over.

Q: Can you replace my old gas fire with a new one?

Yes, gas fire replacements are one of the jobs we do most often. We remove the old appliance, check the flue and gas supply are sound, and fit your new fire to current standards. Where an older fire was fitted before today’s regulations, we’ll let you know if any extra work is needed to bring the installation up to date.

Q: Can I switch from an open fire or wood burner to a gas fire?

In most cases, yes. A conventional flue gas fire can often use the existing chimney, sometimes with a new liner. If you’d rather have a glass-fronted balanced flue fire, the old chimney is closed off and a new flue is run through an external wall. We assess what your property allows during the survey and explain the options clearly.

Q: How long does a gas fire installation take?

A straightforward gas fire replacement or a standard new install is usually a one-day job. Work that involves lining a chimney, running a new balanced flue, or building or altering a fireplace surround can take two days or more. You’ll have a clear timeframe in your written quotation before we start.

Q: Are gas fires expensive to run?

Running cost depends on how much you use the fire and the energy price at the time, but a gas fire is generally an economical way to heat the room you spend most time in. Because the heat is instant and easy to control, you can warm a single living space rather than running central heating throughout the whole house, which many of our customers find more efficient day to day.

Q: Are gas fires efficient?

Modern gas fires are far more efficient than the open-fronted units of the past. A room-sealed balanced flue fire keeps the heat in the room instead of losing it up the flue, and flueless fires run close to 100% efficient because nothing is vented outside. Even efficient conventional flue models are a big step up from a traditional open fire.

Q: Does a gas fire add value to my home?

A tidy, properly installed and certified gas fire is a feature buyers like to see. It presents as a finished, usable focal point in the main living room. As with any fire, the key is professional installation, since an uncertified or poorly fitted appliance can raise questions when you come to sell.

Q: What styles of gas fire can I choose from?

Plenty. We supply inset fires that sit into a fireplace opening, outset fires that stand proud of the wall, contemporary hole-in-the-wall and wall-mounted models, and freestanding gas stoves. You can choose between log, coal or pebble fuel beds and a wide range of trims and finishes to match the room, whether the look is period or modern.

Q: Can you provide a gas safety certificate for a rental property?

Yes. Our Gas Safe engineers can carry out the annual gas safety check on a gas fire and issue the Landlord Gas Safety Record (CP12) you’re legally required to hold. If you’re a landlord anywhere in our coverage area, from Dover to Canterbury, call us to arrange it.
