What Is HETAS?
HETAS stands for the Heating Equipment Testing and Approvals Scheme. It’s a not-for-profit organisation, recognised by government, that approves solid fuel and biomass heating appliances, fuels, services and – crucially – the installers who fit them. It is the only Competent Person Scheme that specialises in the installation of solid fuel and biomass appliances such as wood burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves and biomass boilers.
In plain terms: when you see “HETAS registered installer,” it means that person has been trained, assessed and approved to fit solid fuel appliances safely and to the relevant building regulations. It’s the solid fuel equivalent of Gas Safe registration for gas, or NICEIC for electrics.
Why Does Using a HETAS Registered Installer Matter?
Fitting a wood burner or stove isn’t just a case of standing it in the hearth and connecting a flue. Done wrong, a solid fuel installation can leak smoke, fail to draw properly, cause a chimney fire, or – at worst – allow carbon monoxide into the home. Using a HETAS registered installer in Kent protects you on every front that matters.
Safety First
HETAS registered installers are trained and regularly assessed against current standards. They understand flue draw, hearth and clearance requirements, ventilation, and the correct way to line and terminate a chimney. That training is the difference between an appliance that simply looks right and one that’s genuinely safe to use for years.
It’s a Legal Requirement
Since April 2005 it has been a legal requirement to notify any solid fuel appliance installation to your Local Authority Building Control (LABC) in England and Wales. There are two ways to do this: pay for a Building Notice application and have the council inspect the work, or use a registered installer who belongs to a Competent Person Scheme like HETAS. Because we’re HETAS registered, we can self-certify the installation and notify Building Control on your behalf – no separate application, no inspection fee, no delay.
Your Certificate of Compliance
On completion, your HETAS registered installer issues a Certificate of Compliance, registers the work with Building Control, fits a carbon monoxide alarm, and adds a data (notice) plate near the appliance. That certificate is your proof the job was done correctly and signed off – keep it safe.
Insurance and Selling Your Home
Many home insurers ask for a HETAS certificate as evidence a stove was installed correctly; without one a claim relating to the appliance can be refused. The same paperwork matters when you sell – buyers and their solicitors increasingly expect to see a HETAS certificate for any wood burner, and missing documentation can stall a sale or knock the price.
About Coeval Fires – Kent’s Solid Fuel Specialists
Coeval Fires was established in 2011 and has been fitting stoves, fires and fireplaces across Kent and the South East ever since. Our installers bring over 25 years of combined trade experience to the work, covering everything from a straightforward stove installation to a full chimney breast remodel with a new feature fireplace.
We’re based in Dover and work throughout East Kent and beyond, including Deal, Sandwich, Folkestone, Hythe, Ashford, Canterbury, Whitstable and the Thanet towns.
Our Credentials
HETAS Registered: All of our solid fuel work is carried out by HETAS registered installers, so every wood burner, multi-fuel stove and chimney lining job can be self-certified and notified to Building Control on your behalf, with your Certificate of Compliance issued on completion.
Gas Safe Registered Too: As a full fireplace specialist we’re also Gas Safe registered for gas fire work, so if you’re weighing up a wood burner against a gas fire you’ll get honest, qualified advice on both from the same team.
5-Year Workmanship Guarantee: Every installation is backed by a 5-year guarantee on our workmanship, on top of the manufacturer’s warranty on your chosen appliance.
Flue Liners Warranted to 30 Years: Where a stove needs the chimney lined, the flexible liner systems we use carry warranties of up to 30 years.
Our Approach
We don’t run a high-street showroom, and that’s a deliberate decision. Showrooms cost a great deal to operate, and that cost ends up on the customer’s bill. Instead we work through our manufacturer network, which gives you access to thousands of stove and fireplace designs, far more than any single showroom in Kent could ever stock.
Every job begins with a free home survey. We come out, check your chimney or flue, talk through what you want, and give you straight advice with no pressure. You’ll have a full written quotation before any work starts.

What Services Does HETAS Registration Cover?
HETAS approval applies specifically to solid fuel and biomass work. Here are the services we carry out as a HETAS registered installer in Kent.
Wood Burning & Multi-Fuel Stove Installation
The core of what we do. We supply and fit wood burning and multi-fuel stoves to current Building Regulations (Document J), including hearth, clearances, flue and ventilation, and self-certify the work through HETAS.
Chimney Lining
Most stove installations into an existing chimney need a flexible stainless steel liner to ensure a safe, reliable draw. Correct sizing and termination is exactly the kind of work HETAS training covers, and the liners we fit carry warranties of up to 30 years.
Chimney Sweeping
A clean, sound chimney is essential before any stove goes in, and regular sweeping keeps it safe afterwards. We sweep chimneys and flues and advise on how often yours should be done based on the fuel you burn.
Fireplace Design & Installation
From a simple hearth and surround to a full chimney breast remodel with a feature fireplace, we handle the building work around your stove as well as the appliance itself.
Servicing & Safety Checks
We service solid fuel appliances, check flues and seals, and make sure your stove keeps running safely and efficiently season after season.
Not sure which service you need? Call 01304 211523 and we’ll talk it through.
Our Installation Process in Kent
We handle the whole installation from first visit to final handover, bringing in any additional trades, such as builders or plasterers, where a project needs them.
Step 1: Free Survey
We visit your home at a time that suits you, including evenings and weekends. We check your chimney or flue arrangement, talk through styles and outputs, and advise on hearth and ventilation requirements and any preparation the room needs.
Step 2: Written Quotation
After the survey you’ll get a clear, itemised quotation covering the stove, the flue and chimney work, and the fitting. No hidden extras.
Step 3: Choosing Your Stove
We guide you through the options from our manufacturer partners, matching the appliance to your chimney, heat requirement, style and budget. You’re welcome to check the appliance on delivery before we begin.
Step 4: Chimney Preparation & Lining
Where it’s needed, we sweep and prepare the chimney and fit a flexible stainless steel liner, correctly sized and terminated for a safe, reliable draw.
Step 5: Installation
Our HETAS registered installer fits the stove, completes the hearth, fascia and any surrounding stonework or fireplace surround, and provides the required ventilation.
Step 6: Commissioning, Certificate & Handover
We commission the stove, carry out the safety checks, fit a carbon monoxide alarm and data plate, and show you how to run the appliance safely. You’ll receive your HETAS Certificate of Compliance and we’ll notify Building Control on your behalf.

What Our Customers Say
We’ve helped thousands of Kent homeowners get the stove they wanted, fitted properly and safely. Here’s some of their feedback:
“Best thing we have had done. We’ve started using our Real Copper Kettle on the top of our stove and use the warm water it produces to top up the Kitchen Kettle with already warm water for Tea or use it for washing up the dishes. Money saving and so warming too on these dull winter days. Thank you Coeval Fires.”
– Jean Hickman, Facebook
“I couldn’t recommend Coeval Fires more. They turned up when they said and fitted the woodburner efficiently leaving no mess at all. Lee suggested the style & size for our room and he was completely right! It looks great – cheaper than the other quotes we were given and the dog loved them. Very happy, thanks guys.”
– theothedog, Yell.com
“Very reliable, friendly and they gave good advice.”
– Lee Graeme, Facebook
“They did a great job, completed to time, very friendly happy pair!”

HETAS Registered Installer in Kent – Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What does HETAS stand for?
HETAS stands for the Heating Equipment Testing and Approvals Scheme. It’s the government-recognised, not-for-profit body that approves solid fuel and biomass appliances, fuels, services and registered installers across the UK.
Q: Why should I use a HETAS registered installer in Kent?
A HETAS registered installer is trained and assessed to fit solid fuel appliances safely and to current building regulations. They can self-certify the work and notify Building Control for you, issue a Certificate of Compliance, and provide the documentation your insurer and any future buyer will expect. It’s the simplest way to know your stove has been installed correctly.
Q: Is it a legal requirement to use a HETAS installer for a wood burner?
You don’t have to use a HETAS installer specifically, but the installation does legally have to be notified to Building Control. Since April 2005 that’s been a requirement for solid fuel appliances in England and Wales. Using a HETAS registered installer satisfies it automatically through self-certification – the alternative is to pay your council for a Building Notice and inspection.
Q: What is a HETAS Certificate of Compliance?
It’s the document your installer issues once a solid fuel appliance has been fitted and registered with Building Control. It confirms the installation meets the relevant building regulations. Keep it safe – you’ll likely need it for your home insurance and when you come to sell.
Q: Does HETAS cover gas fires?
No. HETAS covers solid fuel and biomass appliances – wood burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves, biomass boilers and related chimney work. Gas appliances must be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer instead. As Coeval Fires hold both registrations, we can advise on and install either.
Q: What services does HETAS registration apply to?
HETAS approval applies to solid fuel work: wood burning and multi-fuel stove installation, chimney lining, chimney sweeping, fireplace installation around a stove, and servicing of solid fuel appliances. We carry out all of these across Kent.
Q: Do I need my chimney lined for a wood burner?
Often, yes. Many stove installations into an existing chimney need a flexible stainless steel liner to give a safe, reliable draw and to suit the appliance. We confirm whether yours needs lining during the free survey, and the liners we fit carry warranties of up to 30 years.
Q: Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a wood burning stove?
Yes. Building regulations require a carbon monoxide alarm to be fitted in the same room as a new solid fuel appliance, and your HETAS installer will fit one as part of the job. Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, so a working alarm to the current British Standard (EN 50291) is an essential safeguard.
Q: Will a HETAS installation affect my home insurance?
It helps. Many insurers ask for proof that a stove was professionally installed, and a HETAS Certificate of Compliance is exactly that. Without it, an insurer may decline a claim relating to the appliance, so the certificate is well worth keeping with your home documents.
Q: How often should my chimney be swept?
As a general guide, a chimney used with wood should be swept at least twice a year, and one used with smokeless fuel at least once a year. We’ll give you a recommendation based on your appliance and the fuel you burn, and we offer sweeping across our Kent coverage area.
Q: How long does a stove installation take?
A straightforward stove installation is usually a one-day job. Work that involves lining a chimney, building or altering a fireplace surround, or a full chimney breast remodel can take two days or more. You’ll have a clear timeframe in your written quotation before we start.
Q: Can you install a stove if I don’t have a chimney?
Yes. Where there’s no existing chimney, a twin-wall insulated flue system can be run up through the property or up an external wall to create one. We assess the best route during the survey and include it in your quotation.
